Firstly it is clear that the film is going to be a horror/thriller because of the production team. The production team is called Ghost House Pictures and their logo is a skeleton looking through a key hole, which immediately shows the viewer the genre of the film. Furthermore Ghost House Pictures are well known for their horror movies.
It is clearly evident from the opening of The Grudge (2007), that the genre is likely to be a thriller, horror, or a mystery. This is shown in the way it starts; there are titles that come up on the screen in ghostly white writing on a threatening black background, which has connotations of the unknown. Also The sentence stay on there for a while then the words slowly fade away which makes the opening seem unnerving and one key word is left each time, written in blood red writing is left “Curse” “Death” “Fury”. This connotes that this film is a horror because red has connotations of blood, danger and evil. The words tell us it’s not going to be a happy film, it may be gory or even physiological and emotionally dangerous.
The names of the actors appear for around 3 seconds each time which shows the audience that they’re important to the creation of the film. In the red intro scene, the credits change from black to red and are removed by the ripple effect from the water drops, also around it you get a hair like effect floating in the water. it help make the words and help the fade away on screen. The long black hair represents the grudge taking away people’s lives. Additionally The title of the film ‘The Grudge’ appears for about 4-5 seconds which shows the audience that it has some importance to the film, as it the name and you want people to remember the name so what they do is make it bigger than the rest of the credits. The directors credit also appear last to show his importance to the film and wants people to know that he put this film together. He wants to be remembered too.
When we get more into it and see the characters Barthes’ theory is present as we do not know anything about the people; who they are, what they are doing, for example we do not know why the man is up early. The establishing shot showing us that the film is set in a ordinary city, but the man shows us something is wrong by the way he keeps looks around, like he is looking for something bad. And the audience are left wondering why he is on the balcony and why he is not in bed with the girl.

Nightmare on elm street was originally made in 1984 and then was re-made in 2010, Nighmare on elm street is about a serial-killer who wields a glove with four blades embedded in the fingers and kills people in their dreams, resulting in their real death in reality.
Nightmare on elm street is a slaser movie, but we thought it would fit well with our movie as Freddie Krueger (name in the film) who plays the serial-killer seems to like possess them by getting into there minds and killing them whilst they are asleep, so its like they are dreaming that they are dying but it has happened in real life. Also when Freddie Krueger is killing his vicitms he makes it look like they are doing it to themselves e.g. There was a guy sat in the cafe trying not to fall asleep because he didnt want Freddie to come into his dream and kill him (the whole city was scared to fall asleep) Trying his hardest not to fall asleep he manages to shut his eyes and nod off, this relates to Freddie going into his dream, and forces the boy to pick up a knife and start to stab himsef in the hand, The women working in the cafe comes over and wakes him up, to where he finds himself knife in one and hand and the other one bleeding, He them knows that if he falls asleep again he will die.
In the re-make of Nightmare they said that Freddy Krueger would not be "cracking jokes" as it had become a staple of his character in later films—and try to focus more on trying to craft a "horrifying movie". They wanted it fuller expressed as everyone at the studio loved the concept of being killed if you fell asleep. The producer stated that the film would be a remake of the 1984 film, but clarified that they would be borrowing certain character deaths and dream sequences from the enitre Nightmare series
Wes craven is the writer of Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) In this he used his own theory of 'bad things happen in a safe place' e.g. Your home is a safe place and in Nightmare On Elm Street he kills them in there own homes.

The exorcism of emily rose:
The Exorcism Of Emily Rose was released in September 9, 2005 and the certificate is 15. The Exorcism Of Emily Rose is about a young girl Emily who both she and her family believe she is possessed by some sort of spirit/demon and perform an exorcism on her to try save her and to get the demon/spirit out of her for good, in this 'stigmata' also happens to her.
The character of Emily Rose was inspired by the true story of Anneliese Michel, a young German Catholic woman who died in 1976 after unsuccessful attempts to perform an exorcism upon her with psychotropic drugs. The court accepted the version according to which she was epileptic, refusing to accept the idea of supernatural involvement in this case. Two priests involved in the exorcism, as well as her parents, who were found guilty of manslaughter resulting from negligence and received prison time (which was suspended), generating controversy. Michel's grave has become a place of pilgrimage for many Catholics who believe she atoned for wayward priests and sinful youth, and honor her as an unofficial saint.
This relates to our opening horror title sequence because we have Kirsty getting possessed by a spirit/demon and in The Exorcism Of Emily Rose its about a girl who they believe has been possessed, it also relates to ours because we are connecting to spirits through a Ouija board and in The Exorcism Of Emily Rose they are trying to connect to spirits but through performing an exorcism and they are also connecting to spirits for different reasons.
The Exorcism Of Emily Rose was voted into the top 100 scariest films ever made and was ranked 86 and is also rated 6.7 on IMDB and 6.4 on Metacritic. On metacritic it has an overall score of 46 out of 100 which is based on 32 reviews. On the opening weekend of it coming out in the uk it made £1,346,732.

paranormal Activity
Paranormal Activity relates to our opening sequence because it is all about "demons" and "the unknown", where mysterious things start to happen but nobody really knows why. However Paranormal activity doesn't consist of any titles as it is shown to the audience as a documentary, as a group we felt that it would not be a good idea to use this as an example because of this reason. The film relates to our opening title sequence as Kate (Paranormal Activity) and Kirsty (The the Veil) get possessed. Paranormal Activity also do not have a distributor or production company because when the audience watch the film this is not shown it just goes straight onto the opening sequence, this is another reason why we didnt use any of the Paranormal Activity sequel as an example.
